Hey friends...summer is nearly over but there's time to squeeze in one more road trip - this one along Route 66 to Flagstaff, where after a couple of days ogling the Grand Canyon I will be putting my son Ivan on a train to Chicago to start his life in college.

Some years back we journeyed together along that same road in the opposite direction, on the way home from a New Mexico tour. While he slept in the passenger seat, lightning cracked above us and I found a station playing Native American drums. We met two guys along the way who had a human cannonball act and were driving their cannon to the next circus town. That night became the inspiration for the song 'The Night She Learned to Drive,' which is on the album 'Tangle-Free World.'

I'm then headed down to Tucson, where I'll be playing a solo acoustic set at The Red Room. Please come on down if you're in the area, or let your Arizona friends know.

Happy trails,

Anny

Coming to Texas reminds me of ...

Hey all - I'm always looking for new earth to scorch, and yet I must sadly confess that I haven't spent quality time in Texas for several years. The last time through (2004) I was touring with the late and lovely Duane Jarvis, mostly as an excuse for him to drive his Toyota van from Nashville to Los Angeles (where he was moving back after the Tennessee leg of his career...). We had a beautiful trip down Highway 61, with a stopover at a small club in Louisiana where we stayed in cute little cabins (the Magnolia?) - then crossed over to Austin, where we opened for the late and lovely Stephen Bruton at The Cactus. Stephen told us about a club called Railroad Blues in Alpine, Texas - we called from the road and got a gig that very night, which afforded us a great meal along with a motel room. Next night, Bisbee Arizona, again the club name escapes me but they served up a wickedly good plate of barbecue.

Anyway it's been too long -- I'm going to make things right next month, when I play a series of acoustic shows with the mindblowing guitar god Danny B. Harvey. He's played with Wanda Jackson, he's played with Nancy Sinatra - now he's gonna play with me! Please let your friends know! And if you want to meet up for a tall one while I'm there, please get in touch, I won't be hard to find. We'll hoist one for DJ, one for Stephen...and one for the road.

Europe - 2011

Nelson and I arrived back on these shores at the end of March, after over a month in Holland, Germany, Ireland, Scotland and England. Having spent the better part of ten months planning the tour, organizing, booking, promoting, juggling planes, cars, trains and musicians ... it's an epic job! I'm very happy to say it was successful on many fronts. The travel (mostly) came off without a hitch. The shows were fantastic - a great excuse to discover new places, new faces, new roads and towns. We met beautiful, music-loving people everywhere we went - and even some of our musical heroes. We saw some of the most incredible mountains/lochs/churches/statues/valleys/ponies/ancient ruins/sandwiches and more of my lifetime.

One of the best things about touring this way is collaborating with brilliant musicians like Roland Wolff, Duncan Maitland and Richard Snow. Rather than taking a band on the road, Nelson and I have managed to condense our traveling gear down to a couple of suitcases (yes, drum kit and all). These other guys join the party along the way, and it makes every show new and different. We get to hear their great songs as well as their musical and vocal contributions to our set. Every night is a fun and exciting surprise - keeps things fresh for us and it's fun for the audience. Not to mention how much fun it is to have them on the road with us! So, thank you guys, for being part of the Anny & Nelson rolling volcano band!

This kind of trip would be impossibly expensive without the generosity of others. Along the way, we were hosted by friends old and new - many of whom also helped with booking, promotion and other things. Homecooked meals, a few loads of laundry, insider tours and shopping tips, internet connection, rehearsal space and most importantly, a good night's sleep. All are invaluable when you're spending weeks at a time on the road. So here goes -- Roland and Barbara in Munchengladbach, Hans and Karin at The Stables, Yvonne and Paul in Haarlem (and thanks for the jacket Paul!), Suse in Kiel, Tish and Andreas in Hamburg, David at Mojo Soulfood Cafe in Osnabruck, Flip & Jeroen for the camping house, Daragh at 7A in Dublin, Brendan for the gigs in Cavan and the history lessons and Paul & Blathnaid for the lovely overnight, Duncan and Irene for the cushions and the packing assistance, Tony in Glasgow for the Bay, the phone and the car service, Nell for the luvly steak pie and for being Nell, Rob and Ann for showing us all of Scotland, Nigel at The Argyll in Ullapool, Jo and Neil in Fort William, Richard & Heather for the much-needed day off in Nottingham, Terry & Fiona for letting us be at home with them in London (not one but two locations!), Andy Partridge in Swindon for playing DJ in his kitchen, Paul and Ashley for inviting their friends to their living room in Brighton, KC, Rowena, Sarah and everyone at the Jenny Lind in Hastings....the center of the universe.

This is truly the best way to travel, and I never want it to end.

...for sheer pop genius..." New review from Music World Express

RAGAZZA MUSIC - Once in a blue moon a great L.A. style pop album comes around. For sheer pop genius this time out, it’s the 2009 CD release of Tangle-Free World by Anny Celsi. It’s near impossible to escape the fantastic pop and rock music lineage of L.A. From the innocent beginningsof Brian Wilson and The Beach Boys to the great psychedelic flourishes of L.A. and sister city San Francisco by the end of the 1960's, California leaves a music legacy second to none. A thoroughly modern singer-songwriter and guitarist looking to move the California folk-rock and power pop sound into the millennium, Ms. Celsi’s album has it all, including a valuable historical context within which she weaves her pop magic. Critics may cite influences like The Bangles to The Byrds within her music, but dig deeper and the sound further unfolds with fresh covers of the Lee Hazelwood / Nancy Sinatra track “Some Velvet Morning” and there’s even a cover of “Sally Go Round The Roses” with a vocal cameo from L.A. singing great Evie Sands. Key to the album’s success is the outstanding production and arranging from Nelson Bragg, who also mixed the CD, as well also a top band including guitarist Rick Gallego, Brian Wilson band members Scott Bennett (keys) and Nick Walusko, who’s also a member of The Wondermints. Considering the ‘60s vibe throughout the set, Wilson himself would dig this eclectic retro-rock album. The packaging is fantastic too with its fold-out multi-panel digi-pak design featuring all the credits amid a swirl of paisley pop art designs. A trip into the musical time tunnel, Tangle-Free World is an essential cross-section of 21st century L.A. pop.
